Description
Our research indicates that this Art Nouveau style porcelain piece is likely a double handled covered sugar bowl made at the Erdmann Schlegelmilch factory in Suhl, Germany. According to the mark, the green crown flanked by the initials E.S. for Erdmann Schlegelmilch (he was the father of the founder of the factory, Leonard Schlegelmilch), the date of this piece is somewhere between 1891 and 1914 after which the mark changed. The bowl is marked “Royal Saxe Germany”.
This sugar bowl was probably once part of a sugar and creamer set. It is elaborately decorated with lots of gold designs on a crimson or dark red – almost maroon – background.  The centerpiece of the bowl is a portrait of a beautiful woman with what appears to be a foliage crown. The majority of the portraits and scenes from the Reinhold Schlegelmilch (RSP) and Erdman Schlegelmilch (ES) factories were transfer wares rather than hand painted images.
The embossed features of this bowl, the ribbon handles and finial and the gilt decoration make this piece very appealing to the eye. We didn’t come across any identical pieces in our research.
Dimension/size
– With the lid on, this piece stands about 4 ½” tall and it is about 6 ¼” long. It is about 3 ¾” wide. It weighs about 9.5 ounces.
Condition
– This piece is more than 100 years old and is in exceptional condition. Aside from some gilt loss on the handles and rim, we could find no condition issues. Please see photos.
