Description
This antique menorah hails from Poland or the Ukraine, and was made in the late 18th or very early 19th century. 7 inches high, 6 inches wide. Weighs 1 pound, 3.8 ounces. No damage or repairs. This is an incredibly rare model, no other example has ever appeared at any Judaica auction, including in the history of Sotheby's, Christie's, Greenstein, Kestenbaum (I have every Judaica catalog of every auction those companies have ever made, going back to 1949). The Jewish Museum of New York, which has the largest collection in the world of 18th and 19th century brass menorahs from Poland and Ukraine (they have hundreds of examples), does not have this model as shown by the monumental book published in 2005 by Yale University "Five Centuries of Hanukkah Lamps from The Jewish Museum : A Catalog Raisonne", which pictures and describes every antique menorah this museum owns. The only museum that has another example of this menorah is shown from the book "Masterpieces of Jewish Art : Bronze", which is the collection of Judaica held in the National Museum of the Ukraine. Notice the damage that the museum example has: 1)The crack in the hole ring at top 2)The crack in between the oil fonts on the left side 3)The front left foot is missing
On June 5th, 2019, Sotheby's held a Judaica auction. Shown in the last two photos are very common brass menorahs from Poland with no Hebrew verse that sold for ,500 and ,000.
